Chairside CAD/CAM Prosthetics for Same-Day Restorations

The rise of Dental Prosthetics innovation has been significantly shaped by chairside CAD/CAM technology, enabling same-day dental restorations that are both efficient and personalized. This advancement has transformed traditional prosthodontic workflows by integrating digital design and milling units directly into dental practices.

Chairside CAD/CAM systems allow dentists to scan a patient’s teeth, design the prosthetic restoration on-site, and mill it within the same appointment. This eliminates the need for temporary restorations, multiple clinic visits, and outsourcing to dental labs, drastically reducing overall treatment time.

Patients benefit enormously from this rapid turnaround. For example, a patient needing a crown can walk into a clinic with a damaged tooth and leave the same day with a permanent restoration—customized, precise, and aesthetic.

The technology also enhances clinical accuracy. Digital impressions taken with intraoral scanners provide highly detailed data, minimizing the errors often encountered with traditional impressions. The subsequent computer-aided design process allows for precise modeling of the prosthetic to fit the patient’s bite and anatomy.

Materials used in chairside CAD/CAM include high-strength ceramics like lithium disilicate and zirconia, offering both durability and a natural look. These materials are now available in blocks suitable for fast milling and can be polished or stained in-office to match adjacent teeth.

While adoption was initially limited to high-end practices due to equipment costs, increasing affordability and ease of use have made chairside systems more accessible. Additionally, training programs and support from manufacturers have further fueled widespread implementation.

The future of prosthodontics is undoubtedly leaning toward real-time, in-office solutions—making chairside CAD/CAM a cornerstone of modern restorative dentistry.
